10 Points to be considered for increasing business valuation in long term to attract bankers and investors :

1.      Maintain an increasing trend in operating profit [i.e. Profit before interest, tax, depreciation] year on year basis.

2.      Customer Service and Customer Satisfaction levels should be increased year on year basis.

3.      Authority and responsibility for various activities like Purchasing, Marketing, Accounts & Finance, etc. should be delegated among different persons. Only one person should not be authorized / responsible to take all the decisions and manage all operations of the business.

4.      Debtors Ageing period should be minimized to reduce risk factor in business and creditors ageing period to be minimized to increase credibility.

5.      Books of accounts should be maintained properly. Expense of personal nature and other expenses not relating to business should not be recorded in books of accounts.  Both Audited and Unaudited financials must reflect 99.9 % correct profits and financial position at all times.

6.      Proper bifurcation between capital and revenue nature of expense must be done and accounted accordingly to give true and fair view of financial statements.

7.      Revenues of business should not be based on only one or two customers. Business should be done with various customers to reduce the risk.

8.      Strong internal control over expenses and operating cost should be placed in business so that unnecessary expenses are not incurred.

9.      Government dues, i.e. taxes should be paid regularly. Also other statutory requirements and compliances like filing returns, etc.  should be fulfilled regularly and timely.

10.    Proper documentation and vouching for day to day operations  should be done and properly maintained.

If you don't make mistakes, you aren't really trying!

HOW A REPUTED COMPANY LIKE SKODA IS CHEATING AND HARASSING CUSTOMERS:

Myself, CA. Harsh Rathi & my wife Tina Rathi purchased a brand new Skoda Fabia Ambiente from Skoda Ellisbridge showroom on 06/10/2011 Dussehra.  A couple of days later my car gave me following problems: Glow plug indicator and engine light turning on, which damaged my engine. I Sent the car to workshop, where it was kept for 2 days and returned claiming it to be OK.

After a week, again same problem arose, and again i sent to workshop and it was kept for 4 days and sent back claiming to be OK.

Again after two weeks, same problem arose and i sent my car to workshop, where they kept for FOUR DAYS and after keeping for four days, still they could not solve problem and refused to return my car.  The workshop manager Mr Nalin 09099016083 refused to return my car and said it is my car, i should come and pick up if i want.

Then i contacted customer care of Skoda at 9558435555 Deepa and 9558465555 Kamini. They forwarded the case to Kalpixa Patel at Ahmedabad workshop, who claimed in last mail that company is looking into matter.  Then on Friday , 09/12/2011, Ms Patel calls me up and says company is unable to solve the problem yet, and i may hire a car @ 1200/- rs per day, which shall be reimbursed.

I have made my position clear, time and again, that i have paid SKODA for a brand new perfect Skoda Fabia, and i shall settle for no less.  Either they should repair my car without any fault and charges, or replace  with a brand new model or refund entire money paid.  However, inspite of numerous mails/calls, neither have they repaired my car, nor replaced it nor refunded my money.

Please bring the matter to the notice of media, so that big company like Skoda who claim to be customer friendly, are exposed. Also by bringing media pressure, i want my work to get done fast, as company is not paying any heed to my requests.

I have attached my photo in case you want to carrry with story. I am also ready to support you hard copies of bill, workshop bill, company correspondence etc. to substantiate my claim.

THANKS IN ADVANCE..

Difference between CV, Resume and Bio Data

People use the words RESUME, C.V., and BIO-DATA interchangeably for the document highlighting skills, education, and experience that a candidate submits when applying for a job. On the surface level, all the three mean the same. However, there are intricate differences.

RESUME

Resume is a French word meaning "summary", and true to the word meaning, signifies a summary of one's employment, education, and other skills, used in applying for a new position. A resume seldom exceeds one side of an A4 sheet, and at the most two sides. They do not list out all the education and qualifications, but only highlight specific skills customized to target the job profile in question.

A resume is usually broken into bullets and written in the third person to appear objective and formal. A good resume starts with a brief Summary of Qualifications, followed by Areas of Strength or Industry Expertise in keywords, followed by Professional Experience in reverse chronological order. Focus is on the most recent experiences, and prior experiences summarized. The content aims at providing the reader a balance of responsibilities and accomplishments for each position. After Work experience come Professional Affiliations, Computer Skills, and Education.

C.V CURRICULUM VITAE

C.V is a Latin word meaning "course of life". Curriculum Vitae (C.V.) is therefore a regular or particular course of study pertaining to education and life. A CV is more detailed than a resume, usually 2 to 3 pages, but can run even longer as per the requirement. A CV generally lists out every skills, jobs, degrees, and professional affiliations the applicant has acquired, usually in chronological order. A CV displays general talent rather than specific skills for any specific positions.

BIO DATA

Bio Data the short form for Biographical Data, is the old-fashioned terminology for Resume or C.V. The emphasis in a bio data is on personal particulars like date of birth, religion, sex, race, nationality, residence, martial status, and the like. Next comes a chronological listing of education and experience. The things normally found in a resume, that is specific skills for the job in question comes last, and are seldom included. Bio-data also includes applications made in specified formats as required by the company.

A resume is ideally suited when applying for middle and senior level positions, where experience and specific skills rather than education is important. A C.V., on the other hand is the preferred option for fresh graduates, people looking for a career change, and those applying for academic positions. The term bio-data is mostly used in India while applying to government jobs, or when applying for research grants and other situations where one has to submit descriptive essays.

Resumes present a summary of highlights and allow the prospective employer to scan through the document visually or electronically, to see if your skills match their available positions. A good resume can do that very effectively, while a C.V. cannot. A bio-data could still perform this role, especially if the format happens to be the one recommended by the employer. Personal information such as age, sex, religion and others, and hobbies are never mentioned in a resume. Many people include such particulars in the C.V. However, this is neither required nor considered in the US market. A Bio-data, on the other hand always include such personal particulars.

Report Writing Skills - An Insight!

  • Before starting any report, two points must be taken care of:
  • i. Proper Analysis &
  • ii. Diff. Viewpoints to the report.
  • What is a report:
  • A report, simply put means, a description of an event carried back to someone, who was not present on the scene of event/activity covered by the report.
  • Formally put:
  • "A report is a formal communication, written for a specific purpose, includes a description of procedures followed for collection and analysis of data, their significance, the conclusions drawn from them, and recommendations if required."
  • Before writing a report, answer these questions:
  • a. Why should I write a report?
  • b. For whom should i write this report/who will read the report?
  • c. What i have to report/What observations i have made?
  • d. How the report is presented/How should i present the information?
  • Remember:
  • A report is a document, that is it intended to communicate some specific information to a specific audience for a specific purpose in a specific style of presentation.
  • Identify beforehand the PURPOSE of writing the report.
  • Identify beforehand if possible, the AUDIENCE of the report.

Politics in India!

Recently Sonia Gandhi went to a school to interact with the children there. After a brief talk she asked if anyone had any questions. One boy raised his hand.

Sonia: "What's your name"?

Boy : "RAHIM"

Sonia: "What are your questions"?

Rahim: "I've 3 questions...

1. Why did you attack & kidnap Baba Ramdev without approval of Court?

2. Why there is no punishment to KASAB as yet?

3. Why does Manmohan singh & the Congress party not support Baba against corruption?

Sonia: "You are an intelligent student Rahim."

Just then the recess bell rang.

Sonia: "Oh students, we wil continue after the recess is over".

After the recess...

Sonia: "Ok children where were we? So, anybody wants to ask a question"?

RAM raises his hand.

Sonia: "What's your name"?

Ram: "I'm Ram and I've 5 questions...

1. Why did you attack Baba without approval of the court?

2. Why no punishment to Kasab as yet?

3. Why does Manmohan Singh not support the fight against corruption?

4. Why did the recess bell ring 20 mins before the time?

5. Where is Rahim?

Motivation & Influencing Others - An Insight!

  • Motivation & Human Relations
One can buy man's time, his physical efforts, but not his enthusiasm, initiative or loyalty. Thus enthusiasm or willingness to work can be created by motivation. Motivation is the action that impels or urges an individual to assume an attitude generally favourable  towards his work leading him to perform satisfactorily.
           Knowledge X Skill = Ability
          Situation X Attitude = Motivation
Ability X Motivation = Human Performance
Human Performance X Physical factors = Business Performance

Best motivation is self motivation.  Yoga & Meditation are simple ways of achieving the same.  7 Habits of highly effective people by Stephen Covey is encompassed in 1 Shloka of Geeta.

          YOGA=Your Own Guru Always

  • Happiness/Unhappiness is nothing but a state of mind.
  • Our breathing changes every 90 mins(First 90 mins right nostril, then 90 mins left nostril and then 90 mins both nostrils) With every change in 90 mins cycle, our mood changes. Hence DO IT NOW...coz after 90 mins. your mood will definitely change.
  • Health consciousness is first step towards motivation.
  • For a successful and motivated person and organisation, FOUR factors must exist:
  1. Fire in the belly
  2. Warmth in the heart
  3. Smile on the face
  4. Spark in the head
  • The climate of each department affects entire organisational culture.
  • Create your own environment wherever you go.
  • Anger results due to self discontent.
  • Learn to say NO
  • Remember- Mind is the invisible body, Body is the visible mind.
  • There are THREE types of people:
  1. Passive: They tolerate, are soft spoken or hardly speak at all.
  2. Aggressive: Short tempered, believe in Right here right  now attitude.
  3. Assertive: Believe in doing right thing right way with right person. Are courteous & respectful
  • Stephen Covey says: "The love between 2 human beings is not less, only the expectations are more."
  • Pain is part of life, Suffering is not.

Retirement Planning!! - An insight

Retirement. Like most people, your response to this will be `I still have time for it´! All you foresee is that this will be your opportunity to spend quality time with family and grand kids, play golf on weekdays, long walks by the sea, and so on. But as retirement approaches, one comes across the stark reality of sustaining their lifestyle without a steady stream of income - with steep medical costs, taxes, inflation and the rising cost of living.
When it comes to planning for retirement, most of us start thinking of it just a few years ahead of the `R-Day´. The truth is, you need to start today!
Ideally one needs to start saving from the day one starts earning. This helps your savings grow and multiply through the power of compounding.
One key component of retirement planning is arriving at the savings one should have to cater to all of these future expenses. You can arrive at an estimate through the following steps.
Step 1: Think of lifestyle you would like to maintain post retirement.

Step 2: Prepare a monthly budget that lists down what you spend on necessities today so that this would help you in calculating your future annual expenditure.

Step 3: Account for inflation keeping a rough estimate of 7-8 per cent inflation every year.

Step 4: Provision for expenses that are likely to increase to increase in the future, such as medical expenses.

Step 5: Provision for expenses that may cease to exist, such as repayment on a home loan, your children's education expenses, etc.

While there are many ways that one can save; pension plans from life insurance companies are amongst the best suited investment vehicles for this purpose.

How Do Pension Plans Work
Pension plans from life insurance companies are structured in a way that they:
  • Help create a corpus in the long term through your regular premium payments
  • Offer tax benefits on savings
  • Create a tax free lump sum to withdraw from
  • Provision for a monthly annuity that acts as a regular income stream
These also help meet the dual purpose of safeguarding the interest of your financial dependents and create a retirement corpus.
Conclusion :
Retirement can and will be an enjoyable time, in the sunset of your life, only if you plan for it today. It´s never too late to start planning, evaluating investment options, making disciplined investments and make the best use of your working years.

Our lives are not determined by what happens to us but by how we react to what happens, not by what life brings to us, but by the attitude we bring to life.
A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive
 thoughts, events, and outcomes.
It is a catalyst, a spark that creates extraordinary results.

Tiger Temple @ Thailand !....

This is extraordinary…
The tiger temple in thailand is a place where an extraordinary bond between man and the world's biggest cats has been formed. The tigers here are so peaceful…its almost as if they have accepted buddhism as their religion. In fact, they even sit for the meditating sessions with the monks and kneel down in front of them as it they are the gurus. The tigers are so docile that the monks have to sometimes train them to fight otherwise they would lose all their power of self protection.

The link started in 1999 when a sick baby tiger, orphaned after poachers shot its mother, was brought to the monks. Within a few years several other tiger cubs similarly orphaned by poachers had arrived. The most amazing thing is none of the cubs turned out ferocious on growing up. The monks believe that these tigers are none other than the former buddhist disciples who have taken rebirth in the same place.

A paradise for tiger lovers !

A shopkeeper watching over his shop is really surprised when he sees a dog coming inside the shop, He shoos him away. But later, the dog is back inside again. So he goes over to the dog and notices that it has a note in its mouth. He takes the note and it reads "Can I have 12 soaps and a shampoo bottle, please. The money is with the dog." The shopkeeper looks inside the dogs mouth and to his surprise there is a 500 rupees note in his mouth. So he takes the money and puts the soap, shampoo and change in a bag, and then places it in the dogs mouth.

The shopkeeper is so impressed, and since it is the closing time, he decides to follow the dog. The dog is walking down the street, when it comes to the zebra crossing, he waits till the signal turns green. He walks across the road till the bus stop. He waits on the stop and looks up the timetable for the bus. The shopkeeper is totally out of his mind as the dog gets into the bus and sits on a vacant seat. The shopkeeper follow the dog. The dog waits for the conductor to come to his seat. He gives the change to the conductor and shows him the neck belt to keep the ticket. The shopkeeper is almost fainting at this sight and so are the other people in the bus.

The dog then moves to the front exit of the door and waits for the bus stop to arrive, looking outside. As soon as the stop is in sight he wags his tail to inform the driver to stop. Then not even waiting for the bus stop to arrive the dog jumps out and runs to the house nearby. It opens an big iron gate and rushes towards the door. As it approaches the door, he changes his mind and walks towards the garden. The dog walks up to the window and beats his head several times on the window. It then walks back to the door and waits. The shopkeeper maintaining his senses walks up to the door and watched a big guy open the door.

The guy starts beating, kicking and abusing the dog. The shopkeeper is surprised and runs to stop the guy. The shopkeeper questions the guy "What in the heaven are you doing? The dog is a genius he could be famous in life."

The guy responds "You call this clever? This is the 3rd time in this week that the dog has forgotten the door keys."

The pay raise is just large enough to increase your taxes and just small enough to have no effect on your take-home pay.

'Oh,  , I understand,' reporter said. 'A normal person would use the bucket because it's bigger than the spoon or the teacup.' am i right?

15 Reasons-Why drinking should be allowed at work!!

The below are valid reasons as to why drinking should be allowed at work. If you use them wisely, you may even be able to convince your boss into allowing alcohol:

1. It's an incentive to show up.

2. It reduces stress.

3. It leads to more honest communications.

4. It reduces complaints about low pay.

5. It cuts down on time off because you can work with a hangover.

6. Employees tell management what they think, not what management wants to hear.

7. It helps save on heating costs in the winter.

8. It encourages carpooling.

9. Increases job satisfaction because if you have a bad job you don't care.

10. It eliminates vacations because people would rather come to work.

11. It makes fellow employees look better.

12. It makes the cafeteria food taste better.

13. Bosses are more likely to hand out raises when they are wasted.

14. Salary negotiations are a lot more profitable.

15. If something does something stupid on the job, it will be quickly forgotten.

Adjustment With Right People Is Always Better Than....Argument With Wrong People.

She is your life...

This is a beautiful article:
T
he woman in your life...very well expressed...

Tomorrow you may marry a working woman,
but you should marry her with these facts as well.

Here is a girl, who is as much educated as you are;

One, who has dreams and aspirations just as
you have because she is as human as you are;

One, who has never entered the kitchen in her life just like you or your
Sister haven't, as she was busy in studies and competing in a system
that gives no special concession to girls for their culinary achievements

One, who has lived and loved her parents & brothers & sisters, almost as
much as you do for 20-25 years of her life;

One, who has bravely agreed to leave behind all that, her home, people who love her, to adopt your home, your family, your ways and even your family ,name

One, who is somehow expected to be a master-chef from day #1, while you sleep oblivious to her predicament in her new circumstances, environment and that kitchen

One, who is expected to make the tea, first thing in the morning and cook
food at the end of the day, even if she is as tired as you are, maybe more,
and yet never ever expected to complain , even if she doesn't want to; and is learning just like you are as
to what you want from her; and is clumsy and sloppy at times and knows that you won't like it if she is too demanding, or if she learns faster than  you;

One, who has her own set of friends, and that includes boys and even men at her workplace too, those, who she knows from school days and yet is willing to put all that on the back-burners to avoid your irrational jealousy, unnecessary competition and your inherent insecurities;

Yes, she can drink and dance just as well as you can, but won't, simply
Because you won't like it, even though you say otherwise

One, who can be late from work once in a while
whendeadlines, just like yours, are to be met;

One, who is doing her level best and wants to make this most important,
relationship in her entire life a grand success, if you just help her some and trust her;

One, who just wants one thing from you, as you are the only one she knows in your entire house - your unstinted support, your sensitivities and most importantly - your understanding, or love, if you may call it.

But not many guys understand this.......

Tolerance is a virtue..Enjoy it!!

Here’s an excellent story on understanding and tolerance….

When I was a little girl, my mom liked to make breakfast food for dinner every now and then. And I remember one night in particular when she had made breakfast after a long, hard day at work.

On that evening so long ago, my mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage, and extremely burned toast in front of my dad. I remember waiting to see if anyone noticed! Yet all my dad did was reach for his toast, smile at my mom, and ask me how my day was at school. I don't remember what I told him that night, but I do remember watching him smear butter and jelly on that toast and eat every bite!

When I got up from the table that evening, I remember hearing my mom apologize to my dad for burning the toast. And I'll never forget what he said: 'Baby, I love burned toast.'

Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy good night and I asked him if He really liked his toast burned. He wrapped me in his arms and said, 'Debbie, your momma put in a hard day at work today and she's real tired. And besides-a little burnt toast never hurt anyone!'

You know, life is full of imperfect things...and imperfect people. None is the best housekeeper or cook.

What I've learned over the years is that learning to accept each other's faults - and choosing to celebrate each other's differences - is the one of the most important keys to creating a healthy, growing, and lasting the relationship.

And that's my prayer for you today. That you will learn to take the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of your life and lay them at the feet of GOD. Because in the end, He's the only One who will be able to give you a relationship where burnt toast isn't a deal-breaker!

We can extend this to any relationship as understanding is the base of any relationship.

SOME THINGS CANNOT BE FORGOTTEN....

How did one survive growing up in the 70's, 80's and 90's?
We had no seatbelts, no airbags..

Cycling was like a breath of fresh air…

No safety helmets, knee pads or elbow pads, with plenty of cardboards
between spokes to make it sound like a motorbike…

When thirsty we only drank tap water, bottled water was still a mystery…

We kept busy collecting bits & pieces so we could build all sort of things
and we were fearless on our bicycles even when the brakes failed going
downhill…

We were showing off how tough we are, by how high we could climb trees
& then jumping down….It was great fun….

We could stay out to play for hours, as long as we got back before dark, in
time for dinner…

We walked to school, or sometimes we even rode our bicycle.

We had no mobile phones, but we always managed to find each other….
How?

We lost teeth, broke arms & legs, we got cuts and bruises and bloody
noses…. nobody complained as we had so much fun, it wasn't anybody's
fault, only ours

We ate everything in sight, cakes, bread, chocolate, ice-cream, sweet
sugary drinks, fruits..yet, we stayed skinny by fooling around.

And if one of us was lucky to find a 1 litre coca cola bottle we all had a
swig from it & guess what? Nobody picked up any germs...

We did not have Play Stations, MP3, Nintendo's, I-Pods, Video games,
99 Cable TV channels, DVD's, Home Cinema, Home Computers,Laptops,
Chat-rooms, Internet, etc ...

BUT, we had REAL FRIENDS!!!!

We called on friends to come out to play, never rang the doorbell, just
went around the backdoor…

We played with sticks and stones, played cowboys and Indians, doctors
and  nurses, hide and seek, soccer games, over and over again…

When we failed our exams we were given a second chance by simply
repeating the same grade…without visiting psychiatrists, psychologists or counselors…

Such were the days…

We had freedom, success, disappointments and responsibilities. ..

Most of all, we learned to respect others…

Are YOU from that generation?? If that's the case, email this to all your
friends from the same era… This message will help them forget the stress that surrounds us these days….and just for a few moments puts a smile to their faces as they remember what life  was really like in the good old days……

Politics in INDIA

"SLOW DOWN", A MUST READ

(An excellent article to read and enjoy (may be actioned as well!!).
"It's been 18 years since I joined Volvo, a Swedish company. Working for them has proven to be an interesting experience. Any project here takes 2 years to be finalized, even if the idea is simple and brilliant. It's a rule."
Globalized processes have caused in us (all over the world) a general sense of searching for immediate results. Therefore, we have come to posses a need to see immediate results. This contrasts greatly with the slow movements of the Swedish. They, on the other hand, debate, debate, debate, hold x quantity of meetings and work with a slowdown scheme. At the end, this always yields better results.
1. Sweden has 2 million inhabitants..
2. Stockholm has 500,000 people.
3. Volvo, Escania, Ericsson, Electrolux, are some of its renowned companies. Volvo even supplies NASA.

The first time I was in Sweden , one of my colleagues picked me up at the hotel every morning. It was September, bit cold and snowy. We would arrive early at the company and he would park far away from the entrance (2000 employees drive their car to work). The first day, I didn't say anything, neither the second or third days. One morning I asked him, "Do you have a fixed parking space? I've noticed we park far from the entrance even when there are no other cars in the lot." To which he replied, "Since we're here early we'll have time to walk, don't you think that whoever gets in late will need a place closer to the door?" Imagine my face.

Nowadays, there's a movement in Europe named Slow Food. This movement establishes that people should eat and drink slowly, with enough time to taste their food, spend time with the family, friends, without rushing. Slow Food is against its counterpart, Fast Food and what it stands for as a lifestyle. Slow Food is the basis for a bigger movement called Slow Europe, as mentioned by Business Week. Basically, the movement questions the sense of "hurry" and "craziness" generated by globalization, fuelled by the desire of "having in quantity" (life status) versus "having with quality", "life quality" or the "quality of being".

French people, even though they work 35 hours per week, are more productive than Americans or British. Germans have established 28.8 hour workweeks and have seen their productivity driven up by 20%..

This slow attitude has come to the notice of USA , the pupils of the fast and "do it now" brigade. This no-rush attitude doesn't represent doing less or having a lower productivity. It means working and doing things with greater quality, productivity, perfection, with attention to detail and less stress. It means re-establishing family values, friends, free and leisure time. Taking the "now", present and concrete, versus the "global", undefined and anonymous. It means taking humans' essential values, the simplicity of living.

It stands for a less coercive work environment, more happy, lighter and more productive work place where humans enjoy doing what they know best how to do.

It's time to stop and think on how companies need to develop serious quality with no-rush that will increase productivity and the quality of products and services, without losing the essence.

In the movie, 'Scent of a Woman', there's a scene where Al Pacino asks a girl to dance and she replies, "I can't, my boyfriend will be here any minute now". To which Al Pacino responds, "A life is lived in an instant". Then they dance the tango!

Many of us live our lives running behind time, but we only reach it when we die of a heart attack or in a car accident rushing to be on time. Others are so anxious to live for the future that they forget to live the present, which is the only time that truly exists.

We all have equal time throughout the world. No one has more or less. The difference lies in how each one of us does with our time. We need to live each moment. As John Lennon said, "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans".

Congratulations for reading this till the end of this message. There are many who will have stopped in the middle so as not to waste time in this "Globalized" world..
So Enjoy your Life with work not work with life…… keep smiling…..

Essentials in Management!! Part II: Effective Communication Skills

  1. The Process of Communication:Communication is a process which aims at change in behaviour of people.  Concentrate on how and when do you want to see change in behaviour of people, and thus mould your communication.  Proper encoding of message and selection of proper channel of communication is a must.  Remember: its the reciever who communicates by his actions/words and not sender.  Hence, always think from recievers' angle.  Non verbal communication/gestures are as important and sometimes more important than verbal communication.  Remember KISS formula: Keep it Short & Sweet.  Communication should aim at making situations better and not worse.
  2. Art of Listening with empathy: People do not expect sympathy, but empathy is a must. Learn to be in listener's shoes before saying or expressing anything. Use creativity while communication.
  3. Barriers to effective communication: Fear of rejection is one of the biggest barrier to communication.  Always admit your mistake and take opportunity to thank people.  Avoid Ego in communication, wherever possible.  Barriers to communication may be ambiguity of words, sentences, grammar, etc. Make sure your message goes out loud and clear.  Try  "Foot in the door strategy" rather than "Door on the wall strategy" for effective results.
  4. Interpersonal Communication and JOHARI WINDOW: Remember, every person is basically a good person, and cannot say NO easily. But learn to say NO when you really cannot do something. Avoid ambiguity or undecisiveness. Attitude always follows the channel: Beliefs>Feelings>Behaviour>Attitude.  So if you want to change attitude of any person towards you, change his/her beliefs first.
  5. Unofficial communication: Grapevine, Rumours etc. : Are as important as official communication channels. Often problems are solved and results are achieved unofficially rather than officially. Example: Movie Rocket Singh (Ranbir Kapoor)

Essentials in Management!! Part I: Role of An Effective Manager

  1. Manage the knowledge of people-People are not just employees or subordinates. They are "knowledge" workers. Each employee has certain knowledge and skills that lead to his/her employability. The employer should understand and respect the knowledge skill of each individual and treat him/her accordingly.    One should understand that management is a science as well as an art at the same time.  Managing people is tough, but managing their knowledge is easier and smarter way of getting things done.  Americans do not believe in hierarchy structure of organisation, rather have a "First Name" relationship with colleagues, seniors and juniors.
  2. Concentrate on strengths and opportunities: We all know about SWOT Analysis-Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities & Threats. Rather than spending time improving weaknesses or whiling away threats, one should spend more time on finding his strengths and capitulating on the same.  One should try to identify and seize opportunity as and when it comes. When you convert opportunities, they automatically get converted into your strengths.
  3. Four pillars of an enterprise: Four pillars of an enterprise are:  A. PRODUCTIVITY  B. PROFITABILITY  C. RETAINING EFFFECTIVE PEOPLE &   D. CUSTOMER DELIGHT.  80% of world's management literature comes from USA.  Adopt a "WHY NOT" culture, rather than a "WHY" culture.  Have effective employee feedback mechanisms such as Tukka Meeting, Brainstorming, Quality Circles, Skunk Work etc..  World reknowned organisations like 3M even celebrate failures of their employees!!
  4. The concept of knowledge worker : Take care and hone skills and knowledge of your organisation people.  Have a knowledge based culture which suits your organisation.  Have an open door culture and always be receptive to new ideas and suggestions, from all levels of management.  Adopt dynamic management techniques such as MBWA-Management By Walking Around, and see changes that percolate throughout the system.  Care should be taken that any culture change in organisation should be slow and steady, else culture change may result in culture shock.  Remember - First be accepted.  To change the system, you have to be in the system.
  5. Effective decision making : Make your decisions based on adequate and appropriate knowledge and information.  Information should not be over or under loaded.  Do not adopt a defensive routine, do not avoid taking decisions or procrastinate.  Remeber, a delayed decision is as good as no decision.  Always take decisions weighing options on cost benefit scale.  Adopt a wholistic perspective of the decision before taking it.  Involve people and make them responsible for the same.  Avoid TWO viruses of DECISION MAKING viz..a. GROUPTHINK (Herd mentality, "majority is right" view, no change, "why should i bother" view, defensive routine) or b. GROUPSHIFT(decision making shifts to either extremes-either total yes or total no, nobody thinks of alternatives/options). Establish a proper decision making culture in organisation.
  6. Nach / Naff / NPow Managers: Do not thrust your ideas upon others.  Look at the macro/bigger picture rather than micro scene in the aftermath of any decision made.  Select a cross functional team for best results in decision making.
